Jogger Joe Fun Runs Return May 7, 2021

Organizers of the Jogger Joe Fun Runs are delighted to announce that the 2021 series will resume in real time on Friday, May 7, with a few recommendations. The eight weekly races start and finish at Esker Point Beach.

We are urging that only runners who have been fully vaccinated against COVID participate, and that all socializing follow recommended protocols. This means that when gathering before the start and after the finish, everyone should maintain at least six feet of distance from one another, and consider wearing face coverings.

Although the virus at last has been waning, there are growing concerns about new spikes, and we would rather err on the side of caution. That said, we are looking forward to continuing what has been a local running tradition dating back more than 45 years. The series is named for initial organizer Joe "Jogger Joe" Smith, now living in Prescott, Arizona.

The free, self-timed races, which have attracted former Olympians and Boston Marathon winners, as well as casual joggers and walkers take place every Friday in May and June. A 1.5-mile warm up starts at 6 p.m., followed by a 3-mile, self-timed fun run about 6:20. The flat, fast, scenic course follows a route around Groton Long Point.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the starting line on May 7, but in the unwelcome event of a coronavirus resurgence, reserve the right to return to last year's model in which all but two of the races had participants running the course independently at different times.

There is one welcome holdover from the 2020 series: Participants may again post their times, photos, and other comments, on the website joggerjoe.blogspot.com. To do this you must email your result to amburf@gmail.com. Also, if you can't attend on a Friday evening for some reason, you can run the Esker Point-GLP course later in the week, and email your result to the above address.

Note: The Fisherman restaurant is open again after a lapse of many years, and may in May/June offer outdoor dining and drinks.

REAL-TIME RUNS TO RESUME JUNE 19!
With Phase II of the governor’s coronavirus reopening plan scheduled to begin June 17, the Executive Committee of the Jogger Joe Fun Run series has ruled that real-time racing will resume Friday, June 19, barring any last-minute restrictions/complications.

The 1.5-mile optional warmup will begin at 6 p.m. from the parking lot at Esker Point Beach, Groton Long Point Road, Noank, followed by the 3-mile, self-timed run around Groton Long Point.

If a large group shows up we may decide to set the runners off in stages in order to maintain social distancing as much as possible. We ask that participants try to avoid coming too close together during the race – studies suggest that the distance be at least 12 feet for runners, not the 6 feet for ordinary gathering.

We also encourage runners to bring facemasks for any pre- or post-race socializing.

The following week, June 26, is scheduled to be the last in the annual series. Typically we have snacks and an awards ceremony after the final race, and hope the relaxed rules will allow for this kind of get-together.

Stay safe, everybody, and we look forward to seeing you June 19. Check this website for any updates.
1 mile to go
The Jogger Joe Fun Run is a long-standing free fun-run/race in Noank CT that occurs every year on Friday evenings during the months of May and June only.

The run starts at Esker Point, and circles Groton Long Point, returning to finish a few yards short of the start line.

The course is very close to an accurate 3.0 miles, and is as flat and fast as any local running course gets. It's a great place to set Personal Bests or simply to test yourself.

Jogger Joe runs operate on the honor system, and all times are self-reported. In other words, time yourself!

These runs are very casual and friendly. Everyone is welcome, fast and slow, old-timers and new runners.

Currently, during the Covid pandemic of 2020, the runs are not taking place as group runs on Friday evening. Instead, you can run the course on your own, or with several friends, any time from Friday-Thursday of the given week. Then report your times here to have them posted on this website.

Email your times to Amby Burfoot, amburf@gmail.com.

Have fun, and keep the tradition alive.
